Next ‘Joel Selwood’ and new AFL ‘superboot’ become amazing draft steals for two clubs

In the washup of the AFL’s draft, clubs, fans and experts are now slicing and dicing their bounty of new players.

And two draft sliders, in particular, are attracting heaps of attention.

In fact, Essendon may well have pulled off the biggest steal of the AFL heist.

With pick 54 the Bombers secured medium defender and Sandringham Dragons player Archie Roberts.

But in a ranking of the players based on their form and ability, AFL’s media draft expert Callum Twomey had Roberts ranked at 22.

That is to say to he was the 22nd best player in the draft pool, and he also showed elite endurance ahead of the draft with a 6:08 minute time trial (seventh overall).

Not only that, the gun left-footer – who played for the premiership-winning Haileybury College – won the best-and-fairest award for his school.

Prior to the draft, Collingwood champion Scott Pendlebury likened Roberts to Geelong great Joel Selwood.

Pendlebury has been mentoring a select few

Roberts is a rebounding defender who Pendlebury coached at Haileybury College who won the APS premiership.

“Sort of a bit like a Joel Selwood style that I thought for use every time,” Pendlebury said ahead of the draft.

“When we weren’t going well Arch would step up and play really well.”

Fans were delighted when the Bombers snapped up Roberts with one writing on social media: “So you’re telling me we’ve landed L.Hodge at 54?”

Whether it be Luke Hodge (Hawthorn’s triple premiership captain), or Selwood, it does feel the Bombers have landed a rare draft gem and a future leader.

St Kilda also scored a mind-boggling draft slider in 194cm wing/key defender Arie Schoenmaker.

On the night, AFL Talent Ambassador Kevin Sheehan was stunned how far Schoenmaker fell but the young Tasmanian did not help himself and damaged his reputation when caught drinking on a pre-season camp.

He received a 10-week ban for drinking for the misdemeanour which was undoubtedly the reason behind the slide

Sheehan said. “I am shocked he’s still here — the information was he was a chance to go in the late 20s and early 30s — and he slipped right through.”

Sheehan also called him a “superboot”.

“He can kick 60-65 metres,” Sheehan said.

In fact, such is his kicking prowess, North Melbourne personnel manager Scott Clayton said he was the “best kick in the world”.

“(He’s) a beautiful left foot that goes forever,” Clayton said.
