Fremantle express ‘strong interest’ in axed Gold Coast Suns player Jeremy Sharp

3 minutes, 10 seconds Read

Gold Coast have axed premiership hero Jeremy Sharp just a month after the club celebrated its first piece of silverware in any Australian Rules competition.

The Suns won the VFL premiership at Ikon Park last month, with Sharp a key member of the team after failing to cement his spot in Gold Coast’s AFL side.

The running machine played 12 AFL games in 2022, but failed to add to his career tally this year, stuck on 23 games.

But 7NEWS sports reporter Ryan Daniels believes Sharp’s AFL journey is not over.

“The Fremantle Dockers have strong interest in adding delisted Gold Coast wingman Jeremy Sharp, and are ramping up their pursuit – using either free agency or the draft,” Daniels said.

“Bit to play out, but I’d expect him to be at Freo next season.”

The Dockers have had an exodus of players over the past few years, and are likely to view Sharp as a replacement for another winger, Liam Henry.

Henry requested to leave Fremantle ahead of this year’s trade period and landed at St Kilda.

The club also lost gun small forward Lachie Schultz, who moved to Collingwood.

Fremantle have previously had interest in Sharp.

In fact, he was close to joining the club last year, but the deal fell over at the mast minute when the Dockers ran out of future picks to trade for him.

At the time, list boss David Walls said Fremantle were “really disappointed” they could not secure the player.

“We just didn’t have enough capital in terms of draft picks with what we could use to get him,” Walls told SEN after last year’s trade period.

He also said the club had been busy in negotiations with the Western Bulldogs over Rory Lobb, another star who requested a move out of Fremantle.

About two months ago Fremantle great Paul Hasleby also predicted a Sharp move to the Dockers.

“(Sharp) can run, there’s no doubt about that,” Hasleby said on SEN.

“But he hasn’t been playing, has he for the Gold Coast Suns in recent times?

“Whether that was because he tried to leave last year and they weren’t too happy with it. That’s if they didn’t want to give him another chance because they thought that he was going to be a flight risk again.

“But he’s got work to do, they’ve all got work to do down there in Fremantle and there’s a number of positions particularly on the wings that are available for whoever has the best pre-season.

“It’s going to be a pre-season … for some of those players.”

Sharp was selected by Gold Coast with pick No.27 in the 2019 draft after the Suns completed a live trade with Geelong on draft night.

At the time, the Suns traded pick No.11 in the 2020 draft, as well as pick No.64 to move up to 27 and draft Sharp.

The Cats would later use that pick as part of the trade to land superstar Jeremy Cameron from the GWS Giants.
