Conor McKenna’s ‘shocking’ Jobe Watson takedown: ‘Money, money, money’

Brisbane star Conor McKenna has left the Channel 7 commentary team in stitches with an instantly classic interview after the Lions’ win over Carlton on Saturday night.

The Lions booked their spot in next week’s AFL grand final with a 16-point triumph and McKenna was one of the best with 20 touches and one goal.

The born-again AFL star has emerged as this year’s grand final fairytale.

McKenna started his career at Essendon but quit at the end of the COVID-ravaged 2020 season.

But he returned this year and has barely missed a beat after two years out of the game, playing all 25 games for the Lions.

During his days at the Bombers, he lived with former captain and Channel 7 commentator Jobe Watson.

When asked what Watson was like as a housemate, McKenna didn’t hold back with his one-word answer.

“Shocking,” he said with a laugh.

“A bad father-figure.”

Hamish McLachlan pressed McKenna further, asking if Watson – as McKenna’s landlord – insisted on cash.

“Money, money, money,” McKenna replied.

McKenna had the Gabba rocking with a brilliant goal in the second term.

Intercepting a loose ball, the defender slapped the ball into the ground in a perfect bounce before snapping truly.

Commentators were quick to note his Gaelic background with the skills, but it was clearly a case of the luck of the Irish.

“Pure luck,” McKenna said when asked about it.

“Hope it bounced up, but sometimes it bounces behind you. Looks great, but it’s pure luck.”

McKenna revealed his parents landed in Brisbane on Friday morning and he hopes to have more of his family in town for next week’s grand final.

Where will they all stay?

“Jobe’s got a big enough house, he can have the whole family,” McKenna said.

But Watson was quick to pour cold water on that idea.

“We’ve got little kids in there now, it’s not like it used to be,” he said.
