Collingwood star Pat Lipinski suffers ankle injury as questions raised over Victoria Park surface

2 minutes, 40 seconds Read

Collingwood have suffered another pre-season injury blow with premiership midfielder Pat Lipinski the latest player to go down.

Lipinski limped off the track on Monday morning, just three days after Dan McStay suffered an ACL tear that will rule him out for the entire 2024 season.

The Magpies believe Lipinski’s injury isn’t serious, but the latest incident raises questions about the surface at Victoria Park.

Collingwood will be training at their spiritual home until after Christmas as works are carried out at Olympic Park.

The venue has been used to host AFLW games, but is also open to the public during the week.

Some pundits have suggested the surface isn’t up to standard, but recruit Lachie Schultz has no issues.

“Absolutely, I’ve got no problems with (the surface) at all. The club’s happy with where it’s at, and we’re happy with where it’s at,” he said on Monday.

Collingwood star set to miss entire 2024 season

“I haven’t felt anything different, it beats all the country grounds up in Echuca, so it’s good.”

Schultz also added he is confident that Lipinski’s injury will be on the minor scale.

“I just spoke to him before, he just said he went over on his ankle. I think it’s just a little sprain and he’ll be fine,” he said.

Collingwood had nearly their entire list out on the track in scorching heat on Monday with Jordan De Goey and Mason Cox the only absentees, along with McStay.

Coach Craig McRae also wasn’t there as he completes a quick study tour at Harvard University.

Star defender Brayden Maynard remains on a modified program after shoulder surgery, while Darcy Cameron, Darcy Moore and Jamie Elliott were also in a rehab group.

With McStay set to miss 2024, the Pies will likely turn to Ash Johnson or Nathan Kreuger in the key forward role.

They also have the option of adding someone in the pre-season supplemental period.

Former Port Adelaide ruck Brynn Teakle, ex-Saint Jack Bytel, VAFA star Sam Sofronidis and Magpies VFL players Campbell Hustwaite and Josh Eyre are all training with the club in the hope of winning a rookie spot.

Schultz believes the Pies are perfectly placed to go back-to-back and could “confidently say” there were no signs of a premiership hangover.

The 25-year-old, who was arguably the shock of the trade period when he left Fremantle, said he only had eyes for the Pies.

“Collingwood probably was the one that we really sort of went after and they came after us as well,” he said.

“There were discussions elsewhere but at the same time I was pretty set on going to the Pies after the success they have had and such a good club to come home to.”
