Brisbane forward Joe Daniher stuns AFL world with miss of the year against St Kilda

2 minutes, 39 seconds Read

Brisbane star Joe Daniher has added another lowlight to his collection with a nightmare miss during the Lions’ clash with St Kilda.

Daniher has had his fair share of brain fades throughout his career, but this one might take the cake.

The gun forward took a big mark in the goalsquare five minutes into the contest with Lions’ first goal appearing a formality.

But lining up from directly in front and only 15m out, Daniher somehow hooked it straight into the post, which you can see in the video above.

“That’s what you get from Joe though … could be anything!” AFL great and commentator Jason Dunstall said.

“It was a horror drop. It’s harder to miss than kick it from there.”

Alastair Lynch added from the boundary, “that’s a bit of old Joe.”

Daniher has always been capable of the spectacular and the unspectacular throughout his career.

The enigmatic 29-year-old is arguably enjoying the best season of his career to date with 50 goals and valuable contributions around the ground as a back-up ruck.

He had another shocking set shot in the second quarter before finally getting on the scoreboard with an easy major from the goalsquare.

Lucky for the Lions, the misses didn’t come back to haunt them.

Despite some nervous moments late on, they held on for a 12-point victory to secure second spot on the ladder.

The Lions, who were inaccurate in the first half, came through a Saints’ second-half fightback to ensure they’ll have two finals at their fortress of a home ground with a 9.18 (72) to 9.6 (60) win.

The loss leaves sixth-placed St Kilda’s finals fate up in the air, with the chance of a home elimination final depending on Sunday’s results.

Daniher and Charlie Cameron kicked two goals each for the hosts while Tim Membrey had three goals for the Saints.

Lachie Neale led the way with 30 disposals as well as four marks and 10 clearances for the Lions while veteran Dayne Zorko (22 disposals, 12 marks, one goal) was busy throughout.

Saints’ ruckman Rowan Marshall finished with 24 disposals, five tackles and 27 hitouts to stand out for the visitors, while Jack Sinclair also racked up 30 disposals to match Neale’s count.
