AFLW best and fairest awards marred by graphic errors and awkward Monique Conti moment

The brightest and best of the AFLW in season eight were celebrated at Monday night’s W Awards, headlined by Richmond superstar Monique Conti taking out the league’s best and fairest award.

It was a perfect night of celebration for the elite players in women’s footy, with players recognised for the Goal of the Year, Mark of the Year, Rising Star and All-Australian selection, as well as Conti’s gong, which she won by seven votes in a canter.

Well… almost perfect.

While Conti’s night, and that of all the award-winners, was one to remember, the broadcaster’s night wasn’t necessarily as memorable — not for the right reasons anyway.

Fans have flooded social media with the observation that Fox Sports’ graphics were consistently inaccurate during the best and fairest count.

As is customary in the Brownlow Medal count, the broadcaster had a graphic of both the overall leaderboard, and of the votes from each game as they happened.

But it was quickly noticed that there was a problem on the screen — and it wasn’t a one-off.

In graphics for Western Bulldogs games, for example, other teams’ logos were used under the Dogs’ name.

Of all 10 graphics for the games the Bulldogs played in the season, not one of them had the correct logo.

In chronological order throughout the night, the Dogs were represented by logos from Gold Coast, Sydney, Essendon, Collingwood, Carlton, GWS Giants, Fremantle (twice in a row), Brisbane and Geelong.

They weren’t the only team, either.

North Melbourne had the wrong badge for every single one of their games, and nine of Port Adelaide’s 10 games were incorrect as well.

In 52 minutes of broadcasting (including ads) from the moment AFL CEO Andrew Dillon began the count until Conti was crowned the winner, it took until the 51st minute for the problem to be fixed, when Port Adelaide’s votes were read out under the correct graphic in Round 10.

It also didn’t go unnoticed that, when Conti opened up an unassailable lead in Round 8, there was no mention of the mathematical certainty that she would win the medal.

Channel 7 commentator and former Brisbane and St Kilda forward Kate McCarthy picked up on it straight away.

“Well I believe with a 7 vote lead and only 2 rounds left, Mon Conti is the AFLW Best and Fairest… maybe just announce it,” she wrote immediately after Conti received three votes for her 35-disposal effort against the Hawks.

It completed a calamitous night for the broadcaster, whose guest host, Brihony Dawson inadvertently exposed a lack of knowledge about the star of the night.

The announcement of the All-Australian team, called out by GWS men’s captain Toby Greene, was punctuated up by on-stage interviews, conducted by Dawson, with one player from each line of the team.

Conti, who is also a professional basketballer with WNBL outfit the Melbourne Boomers, and has been a player in the league since 2016, was the obvious choice to represent her line.

Dawson, unfortunately, didn’t exactly nail the light-hearted interview.

“Is it true you’re playing a bit of basketball?” Dawson asked tentatively.

“I know you’ve always played basketball, but you’re back playing for the… Southside Flyers?”

“Melbourne Boomers,” Conti politely corrected, albeit slightly embarrassed to do so.

Dawson then blamed the blunder on AFLW and AFL commentator, Kelli Underwood.

“Kelli Underwood, you’re in so much trouble,” Dawson said, attempting to laugh off the gaffe.

“Are you playing with Lauren Jackson?”

Conti was then forced to correct Dawson once more.

“I was last season, but this season I’m in the purple and gold.”

Dawson conceded she had “outdated information”.

“That’s OK,” Conti insisted, “we beat them (the Flyers), actually, in the first round.”

Dawson added: “Well, there you go, that’s a good call to make,” before awkwardly moving off the topic.
